Shopian: (GNS) The hospital administration at District Hospital Shopian has failed to address the shortage of radiologists, as both of the hospital’s radiologists are on maternity leave. This has forced patients in Shopian district to seek ultrasound services at private diagnostic centers.

Sources reveal that the hospital has been without a radiologist for months, with no proper alternative arranged during this period. This situation is particularly challenging for patients, especially pregnant women, who are struggling to get timely ultrasounds.

“My doctor advised an ultrasound, and I had to come here,” said a woman waiting at a private radiology center. She mentioned that the center charged her Rs 700 for the scan. “Had there been a radiologist at the district hospital, it would have been almost free,” she added.

Another local outside district hospital said that patients are forced to refer themselves to private clinics, where exorbitant charges make it difficult for economically disadvantaged individuals to access necessary care. Pregnant women, who require scans every trimester, are the most affected.

When contacted, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Shopian, told GNS, that, “We have taken up the matter with the Director Health, and it may take a few more days” for the issue to be resolved. When asked about alternative arrangements, he added, “We would have arranged, but there is no radiologist in the district.”

As the issue continues, patients, especially pregnant women, are facing the most problems. Locals have urged the authorities to quickly appoint a radiologist or make other arrangements without delay. (GNS)
